Kevin Smith

Dr. Kevin S. Smith, serving as the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations at the Morehouse School of Medicine, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his role in shaping the future of healthcare professionals. With a foundation laid during his residency and fellowship training at Stanford University Medical Center, Dr. Smith has established a distinguished career consistently demonstrating a commitment to medical education, transformative leadership, and operational excellence.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has held key leadership positions at prominent institutions, including serving as the Associate Chief Medical Officer and Division Chief of Gynecology and General Obstetrics at Howard University Hospital in Washington DC, as well as Associate Professor in the Howard University College of Medicine. In these roles, he worked tirelessly to enhance medical education programs, improve patient care delivery, and foster operational efficiency. Notably, during his tenure at Howard University, he secured a grant from the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities to host the university’s first-ever Fibroid Summit, shedding light on the healthcare disparity represented by the fibroid burden among the African American population. His original research on "Under Recognition of Endometriosis in the African American Female" was presented at the 59th Annual Clinical Meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Smith's leadership was characterized by a collaborative approach, working closely with faculty, staff, and students to achieve shared goals and objectives.
Dr. Smith's multifaceted expertise in medical education, leadership, and operations has been instrumental in driving transformative change across healthcare systems. Notably, as Director of Gynecology and Reproductive Health for the West Oakland Health Council, he forged a partnership revolutionizing access to care through telehealth wrap-around services for underinsured pregnant patients. He previously served as the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the Alameda Health System, an integrated public healthcare system of five hospitals and four wellness centers serving primarily Black and LatinX women and birthing people in the Oakland area of northern California. Under his leadership, the department of OBGYN launched one of the country’s first Black Centering Pregnancy models for prenatal and postpartum care, by, for, and with Black people, as well as a Residency training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology with Kaiser Oakland. He also contributed to the development of the minimally invasive gynecologic surgery program for the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group in Maryland.
A graduate of Northwestern University with a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences and the Medical College of Ohio with a Doctor of Medicine, Dr. Smith is certified by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. His commitment to professional development is evident through his completion of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Program for Chairs of Clinical Services and his current participation as a California Healthcare Foundation Leadership Fellow.
Dr. Smith's exemplary contributions have earned him recognition as a Super Doc by the Washington Post and Top Doctor honors in the Washingtonian Magazine. His appointment as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations at the Morehouse School of Medicine signifies a continuation of his mission to cultivate a diverse pool of healthcare providers and address healthcare disparities through innovative education and collaboration.
